1. Daily confession of faith (shahada) “La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadur rasoolu Allah” is the testimony of faith. This testimony of faith is called the Shahada, which is what you have to say in order to convert to Islam. Muslims believe that there is only one true God and he is the only one who has the right to be worshipped. The Shahada is the most important pillar of the five pillars of Islam.
2. Daily ritual prayer (salat) Muslims must pray five times a day, at sunrise, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and night. Muslims believe that praying five times a day keeps the worshiper and God connected with each other. Praying doesn't take very long, only a few minutes, and prayer should make you feel that God is pleased with you. You can pray almost any place you want to, as long as you are facing Mecca.
3. Paying the alms tax (zakat) When paying the alms tax, you give 2.5% of your annual income, only to the needy Muslims and for religious purposes. If you have nothing to give, Muhammed said, "He should work with his own hands for his benefit and then give something out of such earnings in charity." And if you cannot work, "He should help the poor and needy" and if you cannot do that, "He should urge others to do good."
4. Fasting during the month of Ramadan (sawm) Muslims believe that every year during the month of Ramadan, they should fast from the beginning of the day to sunset so they can experience how the hungry and homeless feel. They also use the fast to try and grow closer to God. What they are fasting from is eating, drinking, and having sexual relations. This fast is considered to be good for your health. Fasting is forbidden for some types of people, like pregnant women, people with diabetes, or old people, because it could harm them more than it could help them. But if you miss the fast because you are unable to fast during the time of fasting (being sick, traveling, ect.) you should make it up right after. 5. Pilgrimage to Mecca (hajj) The Hajj is the annual pilgrimage during the 12th month of the Islamic calendar to the holy city of Mecca. Every person that is able to perform the pilgrimage must accomplish it once in their lifetime. Around 2 million people travel to Mecca every year for this. Muslims believe that everyone should wear white simple clothes to show that they all stand equal before God. All pilgrims ask God for forgiveness and for what they want. Hajj is ended by celebrating with prayers. You can pilgrimage to Mecca at any other time of the year, which is called an Umrah, and it is not required but it is strongly recommended.
